Which one is for you
Pick Asana if one or two people can work inside the free Personal plan, which has unlimited storage at 100MB per file, or if the team wants the feature set of Starter at $10.99 or Advanced at $24.99 per user per month billed annually.
Pick ClickUp if the lower per user rate decides it: Unlimited is $7 and Business is $12 per user per month billed yearly, and the Free Forever plan allows unlimited members within 60MB of storage.
What Asana's pricing page does not say
- The free plan stops at 2 users. A third person means Starter, at $10.99 per user per month billed annually for every user.
- Paying monthly costs 23% more on Starter ($13.49 against $10.99) and 22% more on Advanced ($30.49 against $24.99).
- AI is metered. Starter and Advanced include 5 AI Teammates and Asana Dash requests per user per month, capped at 50 per account. Beyond that, requests cost $0.50 each prepaid or $0.60 each on demand.
- Goals, portfolios, time tracking and approvals are on Advanced, which costs more than twice the Starter rate ($24.99 against $10.99 per user per month billed annually).
- SAML authentication and SCIM user provisioning are on Enterprise, which has no published price.
- The Timesheets and Budgets, Compliance management and Permissions management add-ons are billed separately, are available only on Enterprise, and show no price.
What ClickUp's pricing page does not say
- Monthly billing carries a large premium: Unlimited is $10 instead of $7 per user per month (43% more) and Business is $19 instead of $12 (58% more).
- AI is priced in a separate block from the plans. Brain AI is $9 per user per month and Everything AI is $28 per user per month, as shown with that block's switch on Yearly.
- Extra AI usage is metered: AI Super Credits cost $10 per 10,000 credits, and the page says usage varies by complexity.
- The free plan's storage limit is 60MB in total. Unlimited storage needs a paid plan.
- Google SSO starts on Business. SAML SSO and SCIM provisioning are on Enterprise, which has no published price.
- Automations are capped by plan: 5K per month on Business and 250K per month on Enterprise.
Asana or ClickUp for one or two people
Both tools cost nothing at this size. Asana's Personal plan is free for up to 2 users, with unlimited tasks and projects and a 100MB limit per file. ClickUp's Free Forever plan allows unlimited members and unlimited tasks, with storage capped at 60MB in total and 1 form.
A third person changes the Asana side. The team then needs Starter, charged for every user. On ClickUp the free plan has no member limit, so the move to a paid plan comes from the storage cap or from features.
What a team of 5 or 20 pays
Both tools price per user, so the monthly bill is the head count times the rate.
| Plan and billing | Per user a month | Team of 5 | Team of 20 |
|---|---|---|---|
| ClickUp Unlimited, yearly | $7 | 5 x $7 | 20 x $7 |
| Asana Starter, annual | $10.99 | 5 x $10.99 | 20 x $10.99 |
| ClickUp Unlimited, monthly | $10 | 5 x $10 | 20 x $10 |
| Asana Starter, monthly | $13.49 | 5 x $13.49 | 20 x $13.49 |
| ClickUp Business, yearly | $12 | 5 x $12 | 20 x $12 |
| Asana Advanced, annual | $24.99 | 5 x $24.99 | 20 x $24.99 |
| ClickUp Business, monthly | $19 | 5 x $19 | 20 x $19 |
| Asana Advanced, monthly | $30.49 | 5 x $30.49 | 20 x $30.49 |
