Asana is a work management tool for tasks, projects and goals, and Smartsheet is a spreadsheet-style work management tool. Both price per person with a lower rate for annual billing. The difference in how they bill: Asana charges per user and has a free plan for 2 users, while Smartsheet lists no free plan and charges only for Members.
The short answer. Asana vs Smartsheet pricing: Asana has a free plan for up to 2 users and Smartsheet lists none. Smartsheet Pro is $9 per Member per month billed yearly against $10.99 per user for Asana Starter billed annually, but Pro stops at 10 Members. Above that, Smartsheet Business is $19. Which one is for you
Pick Asana if one or two people can work inside the free Personal plan, or if the team has more than 10 paying people and the entry tier is enough: Starter at $10.99 per user per month billed annually has no seat limit.
Pick Smartsheet if the team has 10 Members or fewer, where Pro is $9 per Member per month billed yearly, or if many people only need Contributor access, which Pro does not charge for.
What Asana's pricing page does not say
- The free plan stops at 2 users. A third person means Starter, at $10.99 per user per month billed annually for every user.
- Paying monthly costs 23% more on Starter ($13.49 against $10.99) and 22% more on Advanced ($30.49 against $24.99).
- AI is metered. Starter and Advanced include 5 AI Teammates and Asana Dash requests per user per month, capped at 50 per account. Beyond that, requests cost $0.50 each prepaid or $0.60 each on demand.
- Goals, portfolios, time tracking and approvals are on Advanced, which costs more than twice the Starter rate ($24.99 against $10.99 per user per month billed annually).
- SAML authentication and SCIM user provisioning are on Enterprise, which has no published price.
- The Timesheets and Budgets, Compliance management and Permissions management add-ons are billed separately, are available only on Enterprise, and show no price.
What Smartsheet's pricing page does not say
- Pro is capped at 10 Members. A team that needs an 11th Member has to move to Business at $19 per Member per month billed yearly.
- Business needs 3 or more Members, so its lowest bill is 3 x $19 = $57 a month on yearly billing.
- Paying monthly costs 33% more on Pro ($12 against $9) and 26% more on Business ($24 against $19).
- Several features are add-ons with their own price. Dynamic View starts at $125 a month and Data Shuttle at $100 a month, and both are available only on Business and Enterprise.
- Timeline view, workload tracking and unlimited automations start on Business. Pro allows 250 automations per month.
- SAML-based SSO is on Enterprise, which has no published price and is listed for 10 or more Members.
Asana or Smartsheet for one or two people
Asana costs nothing at this size. Its Personal plan is free for up to 2 users, with unlimited tasks and projects and a 100MB limit per file. Smartsheet's pricing page lists no free plan, only a 30 day free trial with no credit card required. One person on Smartsheet pays for Pro.
What a team of 5 or 20 pays
Both tools price per person, so the monthly bill is the head count times the rate. Smartsheet counts only Members: Contributors are unlimited and free on Pro, and Guests are unlimited and free on Business. Pro is capped at 10 Members, so 20 Members cannot use it.

Is Asana cheaper than Smartsheet? It depends on head count. For 1 or 2 people Asana is free. For 5 paying people Smartsheet Pro is lower, at $9 against $10.99. For 20 paying people the cheapest Smartsheet plan is Business at $19, and Asana Starter at $10.99 is lower. Tier against tier, Smartsheet Business is below Asana Advanced on both billing options.
Billing differences
- Monthly premium. Paying month to month adds 23% on Asana Starter and 22% on Asana Advanced. On Smartsheet it adds 33% on Pro and 26% on Business.
- Minimum seats. Smartsheet Business needs 3 or more Members, so its lowest bill is 3 x $19 a month on yearly billing. Asana Starter has no seat limits.
- Top tier. Enterprise is quote only on both. Smartsheet lists it for 10 or more Members.
