Which one is for you
Pick Asana if one or two people can work inside the free Personal plan with unlimited projects, or if the team wants the feature set of Starter at $10.99 or Advanced at $24.99 per user per month billed annually.
Pick Trello if the team is 10 people or fewer and fits inside 10 boards on the Free plan, or if the lower rate decides it: Standard is $5 and Premium is $10 per user per month billed annually.
What Asana's pricing page does not say
- The free plan stops at 2 users. A third person means Starter, at $10.99 per user per month billed annually for every user.
- Paying monthly costs 23% more on Starter ($13.49 against $10.99) and 22% more on Advanced ($30.49 against $24.99).
- AI is metered. Starter and Advanced include 5 AI Teammates and Asana Dash requests per user per month, capped at 50 per account. Beyond that, requests cost $0.50 each prepaid or $0.60 each on demand.
- Goals, portfolios, time tracking and approvals are on Advanced, which costs more than twice the Starter rate ($24.99 against $10.99 per user per month billed annually).
- SAML authentication and SCIM user provisioning are on Enterprise, which has no published price.
- The Timesheets and Budgets, Compliance management and Permissions management add-ons are billed separately, are available only on Enterprise, and show no price.
What Trello's pricing page does not say
- Paying monthly costs more: Standard is $6 instead of $5 per user per month (20% more) and Premium is $12.50 instead of $10 (25% more).
- The Calendar, Timeline, Table, Dashboard and Map views are on Premium and Enterprise only. Standard does not include them.
- The Enterprise price of $17.50 per user per month is shown with a cost estimator set to 50 users and is billed annually only. The page gives no monthly rate for Enterprise and no figure for other user counts was read.
- SAML single sign-on needs Atlassian Guard, a separate subscription that starts at $4 per user per month on the Free, Standard and Premium plans. Enterprise includes Atlassian Guard Standard.
- The page notes that some Power-Ups made by partners require an additional subscription fee.
- Support differs by plan: community support on Free, local business hours on Standard, 24/5 on Premium and 24/7 admin support on Enterprise.
Asana or Trello for a small team
One or two people pay nothing on either tool. Asana's Personal plan is free for up to 2 users, with unlimited tasks and projects and a 100MB limit per file. Trello's Free plan is free for up to 10 collaborators per Workspace, with up to 10 boards per Workspace, 10MB per file and 250 Workspace command runs per month.
A team of 5 is past Asana's free limit and needs Starter for every user. The same team is still inside Trello's free limit if 10 boards are enough.
What a team of 5 or 20 pays
Both tools price per user, so the monthly bill is the head count times the rate.
| Plan and billing | Per user a month | Team of 5 | Team of 20 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trello Standard, annual | $5 | 5 x $5 | 20 x $5 |
| Asana Starter, annual | $10.99 | 5 x $10.99 | 20 x $10.99 |
| Trello Standard, monthly | $6 | 5 x $6 | 20 x $6 |
| Asana Starter, monthly | $13.49 | 5 x $13.49 | 20 x $13.49 |
| Trello Premium, annual | $10 | 5 x $10 | 20 x $10 |
| Asana Advanced, annual | $24.99 | 5 x $24.99 | 20 x $24.99 |
| Trello Premium, monthly | $12.50 | 5 x $12.50 | 20 x $12.50 |
| Asana Advanced, monthly | $30.49 | 5 x $30.49 | 20 x $30.49 |
